The approach

The music should know why the scene exists.

A score can add tension, tenderness, scale or unease — but it can also flatten a scene if it tells the audience what to feel before the picture has earned it.

I start with narrative function: whose perspective are we inside, what is changing in the scene, what should remain unresolved, and where does silence do more work than music? From there, we build the harmonic, melodic and sonic language the project actually needs.
